The challenge
“Larger systems were dominating media coverage and consolidating practices, threatening the hospital's independence”

Headline results

  • 14Physicians Recruited
  • 84%Community Favorability

Overview

The CEO of a 400-bed regional hospital system needed personal authority to attract physician talent, influence health policy, and defend the institution's independence during a period of aggressive consolidation by larger systems. We built a brand that made the CEO the recognized voice of community-centered healthcare in the region.

The situation

Larger health systems were acquiring physician practices and dominating regional media coverage with a 'future of healthcare' narrative that put independent community hospitals on the defensive. Without a counter-narrative, the hospital faced steady physician attrition, weakening payer leverage, and an eventual acquisition conversation it did not want.

Our approach

  1. Step 1

    Community-Centered Healthcare Frame

We built messaging around patient access, physician autonomy, and local economic impact—language that resonated with patients, physicians, donors, and community leaders without sounding defensive or anti-consolidation.

  2. Step 2

    Trade & Regional Media Cadence

We placed the CEO across Modern Healthcare, Becker's Hospital Review, regional business journals, and local television, with appearances timed around physician recruitment, community initiatives, and consolidation news.

  3. Step 3

    Physician-Audience LinkedIn Strategy

We built a LinkedIn content engine generating weekly engagement with physicians and healthcare executives, framing the CEO as a peer-respected operator rather than a marketing voice.

  4. Step 4

    Community Health Report Video

We produced a quarterly 'Community Health Report' video series and placed the CEO on regional health policy panels and advisory boards—turning the narrative into action that physicians and the board could see.

Execution

  • Delivered the community-healthcare narrative platform within 45 days
  • Secured 22 healthcare and regional media placements over the campaign window
  • Activated the weekly LinkedIn publishing program targeting physician and healthcare executive audiences
  • Released the quarterly Community Health Report video series with broad regional distribution
  • Coordinated speaking placements on regional policy panels and advisory boards

Results

  1. 14

    physicians recruited

Physician recruitment more than doubled in the campaign year, with 14 new physicians joining (compared with 6 in the prior year).

  2. 22

    placements

Twenty-two media placements across healthcare and regional outlets built the CEO's profile with physicians, payers, and community leaders simultaneously.

  3. Favorability to 84%

Community favorability rating for the hospital grew from 62% to 84%, strengthening the institution's political and payer leverage.

  4. Independence preserved

The board voted unanimously to preserve independence, a decision the CEO's elevated profile made meaningfully easier to defend.

What we learned

Consolidation conversations are won and lost on whether the institution has a story large enough to justify staying independent. Physician recruitment is the operational metric, but the strategic outcome is the board's confidence that independence is a credible long-term posture. Both followed the same brand work, executed on a different audience.
