Overview
A mid-market private equity firm with $2.4B AUM had a strong track record but was consistently being outmaneuvered in competitive processes by firms whose partners had public profiles. We rebuilt the managing partner's brand to convert that invisible track record into proprietary deal flow and a tangibly oversubscribed next fund.
The situation
Founders and intermediaries were bypassing the firm because they had never heard of the partners. Competitive processes were lost not on terms but on perceived gravitas. The managing partner had strong views and a generational track record, but no platform to express either—LinkedIn was inactive, media relationships were nonexistent, and the speaking calendar was empty.
Our approach
-
Step 1
Mid-Market M&A Authority Positioning
We built a quarterly op-ed calendar and proactive media pitch pipeline tied to macroeconomic trends, establishing the partner as a go-to source for reporters covering middle-market deals.
-
Step 2
Tier-One Financial Placements
We sequenced 32 placements across Bloomberg, the WSJ PE section, PitchBook, Axios Pro, and PE Hub—timed to fundraising and deal-announcement cycles to maximize inbound interest.
-
Step 3
LinkedIn Thought Leadership Engine
We rebuilt the partner's LinkedIn presence with a 3x-weekly publishing cadence focused on substantive deal commentary, not platitudes—designed to be useful to founders and intermediaries, not just self-promotional.
-
Step 4
Curated Speaking Circuit
We placed the partner on 8 marquee industry stages—keynotes, panels, and intimate dinner formats—putting him in front of intermediaries and founders at the venues where deals are sourced.
Execution
- Delivered the editorial calendar and pitch pipeline within the first 45 days
- Secured 32 tier-one financial media placements over 12 months
- Activated and sustained the 3x-weekly LinkedIn publishing program
- Booked 8 marquee speaking engagements across the year, layered with targeted networking
- Coordinated all earned media to align with the firm's fundraising and announcement calendar
Results
-
+68%
deal flow
Proprietary deal flow grew 68% year-over-year, with notable gains in deals sourced directly through founders and intermediaries citing the partner's commentary.
-
32
tier-one placements
Earned coverage in Bloomberg, WSJ, PitchBook, Axios Pro, and PE Hub created a dense, referenceable media presence the firm did not previously possess.
-
4.8%
LinkedIn engagement
LinkedIn engagement rate reached 4.8% (against a 1.2% industry average), building a durable owned audience of founders, advisors, and LPs.
-
Fund III oversubscribed
Fund III closed oversubscribed by $180M, a tangible LP-side validation of the brand investment.
What we learned
The hardest sell in PE communications is convincing partners that visibility is not vanity. The case usually has to be made in the LP and intermediary feedback that arrives after the work begins—when founders mention an op-ed in a first meeting, or an intermediary admits they would not have called a year ago. The fund oversubscription was the proof point, but the deal-flow lift was the strategic outcome.
