The challenge
“A pipeline leak contaminated groundwater, sparking protests, regulator action, and threats to operating permits”

Headline results

  • 71%Community Approval
  • 100%Permits Renewed

Overview

A regional energy company faced sustained community backlash after a pipeline leak contaminated groundwater in a rural community. Activists organized protests, regulators opened a formal investigation, and municipalities threatened to revoke operating permits. The company needed a community-first response that would restore trust, satisfy regulators, and protect the long-term operating license.

The situation

The leak itself was containable; the loss of community trust was not. National environmental groups elevated the story, local officials faced political pressure to take a harder line, and three operating permits up for renewal in the following 18 months were suddenly in jeopardy. The CEO understood the operational fix but had no infrastructure to communicate it credibly to people who no longer believed the company.

Our approach

  1. Step 1

    Community-First Crisis Response

We stood up a local information center, drafted direct-mail communications to affected households, and organized a public town hall with the CEO present. The principle was simple: every community member should hear from the company directly before they heard from anyone else.

  2. Step 2

    Unified Spokesperson Strategy

We routed all media inquiries through a single spokesperson framework, eliminating the contradictions that typically inflame energy-incident coverage and giving regulators a stable point of contact.

  3. Step 3

    Earned Media Reset

We placed the CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer on regional and national outlets to shift the storyline from 'corporate negligence' to 'industry-leading remediation.' Trade press placements built credibility with regulators and investors in parallel.

  4. Step 4

    Monthly Remediation Video

We produced an updated remediation progress video each month, drone footage of cleanup operations, and community testimonial pieces—posted to a dedicated microsite and amplified through local digital advertising.

Execution

  • Opened the local information center and held the CEO town hall within the first 30 days
  • Placed the CEO and CSO across 20 regional and national outlets over the campaign window
  • Booked 14 podcast appearances to detail remediation timelines and infrastructure investment
  • Released monthly remediation update videos with drone footage and community voices
  • Coordinated regulator briefings and elected-official outreach in parallel with public communications

Results

  1. Approval recovered to 71%

Community approval recovered from 28% to 71% within six months of the campaign launch, measured by independent local polling.

  2. 65%

    positive coverage

Aggregate media coverage shifted from majority negative to 65% positive by month four, with several outlets running follow-up stories on the remediation effort.

  3. Permits renewed

All three operating permits were renewed without challenge, preserving the company's long-term operating license in the region.

  4. 1,200+

    town hall attendees

More than 1,200 community members attended the public CEO town hall, and the remediation video series drew 890,000 views across platforms.

What we learned

Environmental incidents are tests of who the company chooses to listen to first. The companies that recover are the ones that prioritize the affected community—not regulators, not investors, not media—because that's the audience whose belief system everything else depends on. The town hall was uncomfortable, but it was also the moment the narrative turned. People who feel heard tell different stories than people who feel ignored.
